The word mantra consists of the word "man" that means "to think" and the suffix "tra" that signifies instruments, hence the literal translation would be "instrument of thought".

Expelling the sound of mantras impacts the chakras or energy centers of the human body triggering the flow of vital energy "Qi" and creating spiritual transformation. Mantras represent cosmic powers, which exert their influence by means of sound-vibrations that reach every corner of the human body, however vibrations of mantras can be audible or inaudible; thoughts, visualizations and feelings are counted as soundless vibrations and are no less effective than the spoken words.
